Autumn Mountains in the
Style of Huang Kung-wang
Wang Yuan-ch'i (A.D. 1642-
1715)
Ch'ing Dynasty
Ink and color on paper.
Hanging scroll.
81.3 x 50.2cm.
Wang Yuan-ch'i was a
native of T'ai-ts'ang and the
grandson of Wang Shih-
min (A.D. 1592-1680). Wang
Yuan-ch'i's style name was
Mao-ching; his sobriquet
was Lu-t'ai. He received his
chin-shih degree in 1670
and held the office of Vice-
President of the Board of
Revenue. Wang Yuan-ch'i
learned painting from his
family. He is included
among the Four Great
Masters of the Ch'ing
dynasty.
There are many
examples of Wang Yuan-
ch'i's landscapes in the
style of Huang Kung-wang.
He painted this version to
give to his friend Wu Lai-i.
In his inscription, Wang
Yuan-ch'i states that
although he had never seen
the original version by
Huang Kung-wang, his
grandfather Wang Shih-
min had often told him of
it. Hence Wang Yuan-ch'i
based his painting on his
grandfather's description.
He painted the landscape
when he was 66 years old.
